Can't install boot loader on any volume

0

I've been running Ubuntu, dual-boot with 32-bit Windows, since aout 2012' Now I'm trying to re-purpose a 6-bit laptop to run Ubuntu only, and running into a problem. I have a 64-bit 16.04 distribution DVD. I boot from it, and am given two options:try Ubuntu from the DVD, or install it. Trying it from the DVD works fine, but I'd like to install and update it...

So I chose to wipe the disk and install it. The machine is an Acer Predator, so it has both a large HD and a decent-size SSD The install hums along copying files for a while, the announces that it hit an error trying to install the boot loader, and offers three choices:
1, Cancel the installation. I think this just sits there until I gve up waiting for it,
2. Install without a boot loader, warning that I will have to install one later. This choice just sits until I get tired of waiting for it.
3. Install the boot loader to a different volume from the default where it was hitting the error; there's a drop-down list of volumes. I have tried every volume listed, with no success on any -- and no hint what the problems it's encountering are.

Any clue would be welcome.

Welcome to Ask Ubuntu. Many old machines had a MBR (master boot record) protection scheme in BIOS which was supposed to help virus-protect your 'windows' machine; this however also stops grub (or any boot loader) from installing also. Check your BIOS to ensure you don't have this 'malware/virus' scheme enabled (whatever it's called; it varies by make of bios)

  • THAT sounds promising. I;ll dee if I can find that; the BIOS offers several options with cryptic names, and I'll see if one of them meets that description!

  • Acer will also require "trust" once installed. And almost all, even new Acer, need UEFI update from Acer. You need to boot in UEFI mode and have an ESP, efi system partition (FAT32 with boot flag). Acer Aspire E15 will not dual boot, many details Trust settings in step 35 askubuntu.com/questions/627416/…

  • I am not trying to dual-boot this laptop; running just Ubuntu is what I want, I need o get the UEFI update and does it matter which hardware yje ESP is created on? And can I do those from the "Run from CD instance of Ubunu?
