pdf thumbnails not showing in Thunar or desktop (using evince on Xubuntu 18.10)

After upgrading to Xubuntu 18.10 (from 18.04), pdf thumbnails do not appear in Thunar or desktop (thumbnails for images still work).
I am using evince. I tried purging evince (clearing .cache/thumbnails) and then reinstalling, but it did not work.
