Unable to set display orientation to inverted landscape

All I've found so far by Googling is the 'why is my monitor rotated' issues; My monitor is actually mounted upside-down (mounted under a cabinet, so upside-down makes cable-management easier)

  • I'm running a fresh install of Bionic

  • the settings menu has the options, but all options have no effect

  • xrandr is also unable to help

  • possibly an Xauthority issue, but I've no idea where to begin fixing this... :(

user:~$ xrandr -q
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 1024, maximum 8192 x 8192
XWAYLAND0 connected 1280x1024+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 340mm x 270mm
1280x1024 59.89*+

user:~$ sudo xrandr --output XWAYLAND0 --rotate right
[sudo] password for ubu-user:
No protocol specified
Can't open display :0
ubu-user@HP-G:~$ echo $XAUTHORITY

ubu-user@HP-G:~$ xauth list
xauth: file /home/ubu-user/.Xauthority does not exist
ubu-user@HP-G:~$
