Kernel remains broken even after reinstall

0

So I was writing a custom hello world kernel module that setup a Netlink server. The loading of the kernel module worked fine, but once the code tried to respond to a Netlink packet, my machine kernel panicked.

I rebooted, expecting it to be fine, but it panicked on boot:
panicked

Now this is what confused me, because I only ever loaded the module using insmod which as far as I'm aware, shouldn't set it up to start on boot.

So I tried going into the recovery mode, but that got a different kernel panic message:
enter image description here

So at the Grub menu, I loaded the older kernel instead. This worked perfectly! I went back and fourth a few times to ensure it, and I can confirm this.

I tried reinstalling the kernel altogether (linux-image-.-generic, linux-headers-.-generic, linux-modules-.-generic) with --purge. This time, it boots fine, but my WiFi adapter is no longer detected! (Bluetooth, and who knows what else is broken)

Confused, I tried installing the non-generic image (which resolved to -lowlatency) and this boots fine, and WiFi works too.

So my issue now: I can boot the correct kernel image, but the WiFi adapter is not detected. So why would this issue only be present on this specific version of the kernel, even after purging reinstalling the kernel altogether? Any ideas on how to fix this?
