u410 SSD BIOS Problems

0

I am all out of idea, can someone help a newb?

I have successfully installed Ubuntu 14.04 on a Lenovo u410 with UEFI on, secure boot on and with optimus enabled but with several issues at hand.

  1. I have deleted all existence of Windows in the HDD and now when I try to access the BIOS via the Novo button, the BIOS takes a long, long time to load..about 10mins. Is there a fix for this? I would like to enter the BIOS without waiting 10mins each time.

  2. My SSD was not visible when I installed Ubuntu. The original intent of the SSD was to be used as a cache drive only, so I intended to use bcache if possible. Any ideas on how to re-enable my SSD and install bache? It does show up via the BIOS menu btw.

  3. Even after a successful installation, Ubuntu boots up to busy-box, giving me a COMREST ERROR of some sort.

End goal:

  1. Have my Linux OS boot really fast with all my BIOS options that I enabled.

  2. Cache my ssd for performance with bcache.

  3. Have my BIOS load instantly without hangups.

      My hardware info:

      My hardware info:

Concerning speed to enter your firmware setup utility, try downloading the USB flash drive or CD-R version of my rEFInd boot manager. Prepare a medium and boot from it. With any luck, there'll be a menu option on the second row of icons to reboot into the firmware setup utility. (The icon is of a computer chip.) Try that option. If it takes less time, then you might consider installing rEFInd on your disk and using it instead of or in addition to GRUB. I vaguely recall that a similar feature is available in GRUB, but I don't know offhand how to activate it.

Concerning your SSD, I don't see any evidence of it in your hardware list. My suspicion is that your kernel lacks a driver that's required to access it. What's your kernel version? (You can get it by typing uname -r.) If it's something in the 3.13 series, you can update it to a 3.16-series kernel as described here. It's conceivable, but not certain, that a kernel update will enable the hardware.

As to booting to busy-box, are you sure that's what's happening? If X can't start, or if you mistakenly installed the server version of Ubuntu, the OS will boot to text mode, with a login: prompt and the ability to use the OS in text mode but without X. If you installed the server version, I recommend trying again with the desktop version. If you installed the desktop version and are booting to text mode, then you should post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file to a pastebin site and then post a link to your document here. If you're really booting to a busybox shell, then something more serious is wrong, and you need to post more information, such as any error messages you see on the screen. Posting a digital photo of the screen may be in order, particularly if the messages are complex.

          • uname -r resulting in 3.16.0-34-generic I vaguely remember getting fsyncing error when I tried to format the SSD drive.

          • When I turn on my laptop, there is a black screen for about one min, then just a purple screen for about one min as well, then Busy-box loads. I then get the error message ata1: comreset failed (errno=-16). I am able to type exit which lets me boot into my desktop.

          • If typing exit enables X, then you do not have an X problem; you've got some sort of hardware problem, most likely with disk detection. Since you're already using the latest kernel for 14.04, the easiest way to try something more recent is to try 15.04, which will be released on the 23rd. You can get a beta here. If that doesn't work, you may need to track down drivers and compile a kernel yourself. Reporting a bug may also be worthwhile. If the machine is new, consider returning it for a refund.

          • I managed to get Ubuntu loading directly. The was an option of having WinOS EUFI or Other OS, I picked WINOS. Now the only thing left is reenabling the SSD for cache. The thing is my BIOS sees the SSD but my kernel does not. Any hints as to loading ssd modules in the kernel? a howto of sorts. Should I bother with Kernel 4.0? Thank You.

If you're really booting to a busybox shell, then something more serious is wrong, and you need to post more information, such as any error messages you see on the screen. Posting a digital photo of the screen may be in order, particularly if the messages are complex.

Thank You.
