Gdański Klub Żużlowy "Wybrzeże" (Gdańsk Coast Speedway Club) is a Polish multi-sports club most known for the motorcycle speedway team based in Gdańsk who race in the Extraleague (1st Division). The only other existing section of the club is the men's handball team.

Stadium[edit]


The Speedway Stadium is located on ulica Długie Ogrody. It contains 15,000 seats and the track is 349 metres (382 yd) long with a granite surface. The track record of 61.28 seconds was made by Darcy Ward on 21 August 2011.

Other Sections[edit]


The club had many other sections over the years, out of which only the speedway team survived throughout the club's history. The men's handball team has been revived in 2010.



Athletics[edit]


The athletics team competed between 1945-1971. The clubs achievements were:



  • 22 Senior Polish Championship Titles

  • European Championships Vice-Champion: Władysław Nikiciuk - javelin, 1966 European Athletics Championships

  • European Championships Bronze Medal: Władysław Komar - shot put, 1966 European Athletics Championships



Basketball[edit]


There was a men's section which existed between 1949-1995. The club made a brief re-appearance 2007-2009 before it folded once more. The club's honours include:



  • 4x Polish Champions: 1971, 1972, 1973, 1978

  • 3x Polish Cup Winners: 1976, 1978, 1979

  • 3 Individual European Championship medals

The section existed between 1945-1990. Their honours included:

Gymnastics[edit]


The section only existed for 4 years between 1952-1956. Lidia Szczerbińska won a bronze medal at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne whilst representing the club.



Handball[edit]


The women's section existed only briefly between 1952-1963, however the men's team competed between 1951-2002, during which it was one of the most successful handball teams in the country, including a 5-year dominance which saw the club win 5 titles 1984-1988. The section was revived in 2010 in an attempt to restore its former glory, which include this list of achievements:



  • 10x Polish Champions: 1966, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1991, 1992, 2000, 2001

  • 2x European Runners-up: 1985, 1986

  • 2 Individual Bronze World Championship Medals
