Live USB Auto-login not working 18.1

0

I created a persistent live USB of Ubuntu 18.10. I need it to auto boot and run a python3 script to send a message to a waiting server. Works great the first time or two, then the Live USB forces me to set up a user. Ok, no problem, do it and redo the work to setup the python script. The problem is that I cannot get that user to auto-login. I went into the account settings, but after I clicked the auto login box to green, then exited, I go back in and the box is no longer green. I tried following the directions here:

Ubuntu 17.10 GDM Auto-Login not working

but there is no custom.conf file in the /etc/gdm3 directory and it will not allow me to add it.

I'm pretty new at this, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm not sure if this is a Live USB issue or what.

Thanks,
Simon
