Ratios and rounding figures to nearest thousand
I'm using the WHO Suicide Statistics to try and ascertain the rate of suicide per 100,000 of the population. I'm afraid I'm not from a maths background and this is the first time using Stack Mathematics, so forgive me if this sounds simple.
So, I have two questions:
- How do I calculate this rate?
- What is the logic/methods behind rounding ratios?
Below is an mock example of the data I'm using:
Country Suicides Population
Italty 5000 45000000
Burma 350 2365000
Ghana 1100 14550000
My first step was to calculate the ratio of suicides to population, i.e.
Ratio = suicides / population
Country Suicides Population Ratio
Italty 5000 45000000 0.00011
Burma 350 2365000 0.00014
Ghana 1100 14550000 0.00007
So, how can I ascertain how many suicides are estimated for every 100,000 people in this example?

You've done the key step already. By computing Ratio you have determined the multiplicative factor. Take Italy, say. Just as $5000=.00011dots times 45,000,000$ we have $11.111dots = .00011times 100,000$. Thus there are $11.111dots$ suicides in Italy out of every hundred thousand people.
