　　中国では「セイ」「ショウ」といった読みであるが、日本では古代などに権力者が、人々の「まつる」という行為（「まつり（祭り）」）を利用・活用して権力を維持し支配していたので、大和言葉の「まつりごと」という音が当てられることになった。ただし、こういう概念と強引に結び付けてしまうことは、世界的に見ると必ずしも一般的ではない。
